Notes:

Kitchen –

– Sister elements of red show typical Asian wear. Backs up point about girls covered more, suggests she’s more typically Muslim.

– Typical British cereal in background.

Cramped praying room-

– Shows different clothing. Father has a beard, dressed westerly.

– Comparison between clothes, he’s not wearing a hat. Shot shows typical apart from curtains of western house.

– The family looks like they are from Pakistan, the mothers dressed in typical ethnic clothes which show a contrast to what Sohail is wearing which are typical British clothes, however she is also wearing a typical British cardigan, Sohail is more western.

– The shot is a cramped one, Muffins just been baked, probably by mother and this is another contrast, western.

– Challenging stereotype of Muslims. It looks and feels like a typical British house very Western. Looks westernized. Making us feel differently about the typical stereotype.

Others –

– They look western too, nothing particularly Asian about them.

– Classic red brick houses, they are comfortable in this atmosphere, no clothing clashing, no compromising.

– Little bits of sound, call to mosque.

– Policemen hints at possibility of conformation, something in the air.

– Clashing sounds normal grubby British street.

– Living in the same place, clashing of typical Muslim outfit. Reminder as they talk in local accents , idea of these men working across all sorts of cultured background, jumbled up, assumptions as they are dressed in the hat that they will speak in an Asian accent, they are defied. Classic British scene but in amongst are mosques different cultures, drawing up boundaries challenging stereotypes all the time. Yorkshire accents ,mosque at end of road.

In the room with the girls:

– She has drapes on room, different slightly, tapping into stereotypical assumptions and presumptions, music as well is distinguishable. Representing her own attitude about her views to politics ect.

– Real orange glow, it’s westernly.

– Her friend signifies where she’s from . It’s emphasising her ethnic background. Although they are more Muslim but language is so different. White British people are questioning, surprised they sound so British. Her hair, her outfit.

– Her room taps into hard working Asian students, out perform . Computer , posters , she’s a medical student. Stereotype of young Asian . Colours feel a little bit different.

George bush in ‘number one terrorist‘, anti-Americanism, important part. Centre of screen. Her feelings and thoughts.

– She makes it clear she doesn’t want to be British, tension in family. Fathers dreams embrace all opportunities- pro British perspective. Camera shows they are far apart in two shot = distance but when arguing = close ups and over the shoulder shots, tension but also close and designed to represent two backgrounds- British and Asian. So despite their differences they are still close, friends, intimacy and tenderness. Picks him over her friend.

– Music contributes a sinister presence, mystery, ND. Not given much help. Forbidding overwhelming building, formal, costumes are formal. Jo is unnecessarily flirtatious.

– Doesn’t fit ideas with formal interview or him applying. Coffee cups and body language they are intimate, flirtatious, not confrontational but unsettling. Not a typical interview.

Is he saying the right things? Is he into rouble? Over he shoulder shot , she’s facing out a bit, allows us not to settle, not sure how he’s doing, saying the right things anti Muslim? He’s being honest.

– She seems quite remote and far away , half turned, legs crossed away where she stands.

Humming through uncomfortable silence, he’s writing, good or bad? He looks down.

Personal questions are asked.

Showing this isn’t a normal interview. Tone is now different, intimate an comfortable. Flirting , closer to her.
